Prof. Dr. Vahit Özmen was born in Muş and completed his primary and secondary education in Van. He graduated as the top-ranking student from Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1978, where he had enrolled in 1972. In the same year, he began his residency as an assistant in the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. In 1982, he became a General Surgery Specialist with his thesis entitled “The Therapeutic Value of Heparinized Total Blood Exchange in Endotoxic Shock Induced in Rabbits.”

He completed his military service between 1983 and 1984 at Gümüşsuyu Military Hospital in Istanbul. He fulfilled his compulsory public service as a chief resident between 1984 and 1986 at Haseki Training and Research Hospital, Department of Surgery. In 1986, he was invited back to Istanbul Faculty of Medicine as a chief resident in the Department of General Surgery. In the same year, he took part in the team that performed Turkey’s first cadaveric kidney transplantation and worked in this field for two years.

He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1987 and became one of the founders of the Breast Diseases Research and Treatment Association and the Breast Diseases Clinic at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1989.

In 1989, he was invited to Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, USA, where he worked for two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Faculty Member. During this period, he conducted experimental and clinical studies in surgical oncology—particularly breast cancer—and gastroenterology. Upon returning to his faculty in 1991, he organized more than 100 postgraduate courses on laparoscopic surgery and breast cancer together with his colleagues. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1995.

He worked for short periods at MD Anderson Cancer Center and Houston Methodist Hospital in October of 1993, 1995, and 1997; and at Mayo Clinic, Rochester in 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2002, he was invited to Tokai University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, where he delivered lectures. In 2004, he was awarded an honorary diploma and medal by the Bulgarian Surgical Association for his educational contributions in laparoscopic surgery and breast cancer in Bulgaria. He continued his academic activities internationally, including at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (2005–2006), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (2007), the American College of Surgeons Annual Congress (2016), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (2017), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, WHO) in 2018 as a Visiting Professor. In 2019, he delivered lectures in Saint Petersburg for the Russian Oncology Federation and in Tokyo for the Japanese Breast Cancer Society.

Prof. Özmen has received numerous awards at national and international congresses. The Breast Cancer Awareness Project, for which he served as Principal Investigator, was selected as the most successful project by the Breast Health Global Initiative in 2008 and received a grant of USD 25,000. He also led the Bahçeşehir Breast Cancer Early Detection and Screening Project (2008–2018), which followed nearly 10,000 women over ten years and resulted in the early diagnosis of breast cancer in 146 women. This project demonstrated the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of population-based mammographic screening in Turkey and supported initiating screening at age 40. Based on these findings, the Turkish Ministry of Health lowered the recommended screening age from 50 to 40.

Between 2002 and 2016, he served as a member of the Advisory Board of the Cancer Control Department of the Ministry of Health and chaired the Breast Cancer Subcommittee. In 2016, he was appointed to the Scientific Board of the Turkish Cancer Institute, where he led projects on cancer epidemiology and carcinogens in Turkey.

In 2005, Prof. Özmen founded the journal European Journal of Breast Health, where he serves as Editor-in-Chief. The journal is indexed in PubMed Central and supported by the Senologic International Society (SIS).

He also developed the National Breast Cancer Registry Program in Turkey in 2005. The data collected through this program were published in book form as Breast Cancer in Turkey in both Turkish and English in 2013 (analysis of 13,000 patients) and 2018 (analysis of 20,000 patients).

In 2006, in collaboration with the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, he led the establishment of Breast Disease Clinics in 13 Training and Research Hospitals in Istanbul and contributed to the training of physicians through organized courses.

As the founder and President (2009–2011) of the Federation of Breast Diseases Associations of Turkey, he coordinated nationwide certification courses for healthcare professionals in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s Cancer Control Department. In 2011, he initiated a mobile mammography screening program in Muş, which was later expanded nationwide by the Ministry of Health to include screening for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers.

Prof. Özmen is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS) and the National Cancer Consortium Center. He is a founding member of the Senologic International Society (SIS) and the Turkish Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery Association. He served as President of the Federation of Breast Diseases Associations of Turkey (2009–2011) and the Istanbul Breast Association (2009–2012). He is also a founding member and project coordinator of the Breast Health Society (MEMEDER).

He has served as Editor-in-Chief of European Journal of Breast Health and Surgical Science, and as editor or editorial board member for numerous international journals. He has also been a reviewer for leading journals such as The Lancet Oncology, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, World Journal of Surgery, British Journal of Cancer, and others.

Between 2000 and 2004, he served as Chairman of the Health Committee of the Turkish Football Federation, and between 2000 and 2006, he was a member of the Executive Board of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He is also a member of the Central and Eastern European Countries Cancer Action Group (CEECAG) and the AVON World Breast Cancer Expert Group.

Prof. Özmen is currently a faculty member in the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. His primary areas of research and clinical interest include breast cancer and the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. To date, he has authored over 200 scientific publications in Turkish and international journals, as well as numerous books and book chapters. His work has been widely cited by researchers worldwide.

He is married and has two children.

Contributions of Prof. Dr. Vahit Özmen to Turkish Medicine

• 1986 – Establishment of the first Breast Outpatient Clinic and Breast Surgery Unit in Turkey at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine
• 1987 – Initiation of Turkey’s first multidisciplinary weekly Breast Cancer Council (tumor board), which continues to this day
• 1992 – Organization of the first Breast Diseases Training Course in Turkey (more than 100 courses have been held to date)

• 2005 – Implementation of the National Breast Cancer Registry Program (the first organ-specific cancer registry in Turkey; this program provided comprehensive data on the incidence, stages, clinical and pathological characteristics, and survival outcomes of breast cancer in Turkey. Two books have been published based on these data, with records of more than 25,000 patients)
• 2003–2016 – Member of the National Cancer Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health and Chair of the Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Screening Committee
• 2006 – Establishment of Breast Clinics in 13 Training and Research Hospitals in Istanbul and training of specialists working in these units
• 2008–2018 – Execution of Turkey’s first population-based organized mammographic screening program (this project demonstrated the feasibility of mammographic screening in Turkey, led to lowering the screening age from 50 to 40 by the Ministry of Health, proved cost-effectiveness, and its results were published)
